Burritt's Fresh Markets have been in the retail business offering top quality meat, seafood, wine and specialty groceries for 23 years.
In 1987, Ken and Kurt Burritt ventured to create a small corner butcher shop in Traverse City, Michigan. Ken had a background in restaurant management, and Kurt had worked in meat markets for years. They called their store Burritt's Meat Market. In just a short time, they found that their town was looking for more than a meat market — Traverse City needed a gourmet specialty store, so in 1988, the brothers expanded the store to include produce, groceries, beer, wine, and specialty products.
By 1995, Kurt was ready to move on, to home school his two children and travel the country. Ken and his wife, Teri, took this time to reinvent the store and boost the supply of wines from around the world.
2002 brought even more changes to Burritt's, when Ken bought out the neighboring Carlson's Fish Market. He brought in more local products, enlarged the fish department, and changed the name of the store to fit the evolving philosophy of fresh, quality foods.
Burritt's Fresh Market continues to evolve and expand, but always aims to keep the small-town feel through friendly and devoted service. Burritt's constantly brings in products based on customer requests and recommendations.
Burritt's strives to be your corner store with gourmet flair.
Anyone can fill a storefront with inventory, but we feel what makes us stand out is our exceptional customer service. We pride ourselves on our knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly staff. Customers are our first priority — we maintain longstanding relationships with our loyal customers, many of whom have become good friends.
We are most proud when we hear customers tell us how wonderful our employees are. They often cite specific areas in which they were helped, and are often on a first-name basis with particular employees, and may request their service right when they walk in the door. This trumps any accolades the store may receive, because without these interactions, the true character of Burritt's Fresh Markets would be missing.
Additionally, Burritt's is proud of its relationship with local suppliers. We believe that some of the best products are created in our unique area of Michigan, and provide local gourmet delights from biscotti to hummus to fresh cheeses, vegetables, and fruit.
A few rewards or recognitions we have recently received include being nominated for Small Business Association's Small Business of the Year Nationwide and recognition from the 4-H for spending at least $40,000 over 23 years. We have also been published in Traverse the Magazine, Edible Grand Traverse, and the Record-Eagle, and most recently in Cooking Light, a national magazine.
Burritt's Fresh Markets has gotten to where it is today by consistently providing a quality product and guaranteeing it, by persevering, setting goals, being willing to change, thoroughly training employees, seeking out new products, and being there to listen to everyone who comes through our doors.
Burritt's donates to several local charities and organizations, including: Father Fred Foundation, House of Hope, Women's Resource Center, West Side Community Church, and 4-H of Grand Traverse. True to form, Burritt's often raises money for these causes through fun community events such as wine tastings and dinners. We also recognize the needs of people worldwide, and have sponsored charity work in Kenya. We have been fortunate as a business and are proud to be able to give back to our community and our world.
